The Homeschool Project

My top 10 iphone apps for homeschoolers…

itouch

I’m probably one of the last people in America who do not own a cell phone, but that’s okay.  At least I’m not frying my brain or whatever they say happens when you use a cell phone all the time.  Anyhoo, just because I don’t have a cell phone doesn’t mean I’m completely out of touch.  As a matter of fact, I have a touch… an ipod touch.

While this device technically belongs to me, my children often seem to think otherwise.  Truth be told, they have more apps on there than I do!  So here’s our topic for today – iphone or touch apps for homeschoolers.

Here’s my top 10…

  1. ABC Animals from Critical Matter for $1.99 “a wonderful set ofabc interactive flashcards that aid in teaching young children to recognize, say and print  English alphabet letters”
  2. ToddlerPhone Numbers (99 cents!) “is a set of three iPhone educational games designed for preschool-age children. They contain lots of animation and interactivity to hold young kids’ attention, while teaching counting skills at the same time. A fun and interactive way to teach your child the numbers one through twelve.”
  3. Hangman Free from Optime Software “brings the classic game Hangman to your iPhone with graphics and gameplay that will keep you playing for hours.”
  4. Chess Free also from Optime Softwareshapeimage_2
  5. Sudoku “ is a great introduction to the fun and puzzle solving challenge of Sudoku. If you’re not sure this is the right game for you, try it free.”  (check out their other sudoku apps for some major brain frying sudoku action)
  6. Doodle Kids (free) “This is a painting program written by Lim Ding Wen, a 9 year old iPhone developer living in Singapore. This program is designed specially for his sisters and all the kids in the world.”
  7. KidArt another fun kids art program, this time with pre-made scenery.
  8. Mathtraption – (99 cents) “A fun, pirate math contraption, since even pirates need to learn their numbers, matey!”
  9. The Oregon Trail (free) “Assume the role of a wagon leader in a side-view journey where your strategic decisions must ensure the safety of your party along the treacherous Oregon Trail. Overcome the perilous journey to Oregon in America’s Wild West. Just like the real pioneers, experience the decision-making, problem-solving, and role-playing fun of this historical event. A unique strategy/educational game relating the first pioneers’ journey to Western American.”
  10. Cargo another sweet app from Salem Pirates. you must check out all the others!!

So that’s just a small sampling of what we do when we’re waiting for tables at a restaurant or on a roadtrip to Nanny’s.

What are some of your favorites?
