The Homeschool Project

FAQs

1. What homeschool curriculum do you use?

We use Sonlight cores as the spine of our studies for history adding in lots of hands on things such as Time Travelers from Homeschool In the Woods, History Pockets from Evan Moor and Lapbooks from Hands of a Child.

For math, we use Horizons published by Alpha Omega

For science, we have used Sonlight in the past, Lifepacs from Alpha Omega and this year we are trying something new called Considering God’s Creation

My youngest son and daughter are using Horizons Reading and Phonics, Penmanship and Spelling for language arts. My oldests are using Lifepacs.
Everyone uses Sonlight’s readers.

2. Do you homeschool year round or take a break in the summer?

We would be considered year round homeschoolers. We take many short breaks throughout the entire year to visit family and have a vacation. I find we work much better if we stay on a routine schedule also. There are a couple of subjects that we will ‘end’ until September if we finish them early – science and Bible. This does not include our daily Bible time together. We always do that. But if the kids have another curriculum such as a Lifepac for Bible and they finish before September, they are allowed a break.

3. How long does it take you to finish school each day?

This all depends upon the activities planned for the day and how grumpy we all are. For a typical school day with all our regular subjects, school will usually last from about 9 am to 3 pm, including a lunch break.

4. Why did you decide to homeschool your children?

I can’t remember exactly when my husband and I were introduced to homeschooling, but I do remember that we had already decided to do it before any of them were born. We know that our responsibilities as parents are to care for our children and to teach them in all things. We truly feel the best way this can be done is through home instruction – in a familial and social environment rather than an institution.

5. Are you planning on homeschooling through high school?

Yes.

6. When you review products on your blog, are you paid?

Companies often send me products to review. These products are used and kept by myself and my family. I will always give my honest opinions about a product I am reviewing. I will never give a dishonest or ‘sweetened’ review of any product.
