A FREE resource from American Heritage…

HSCrew468x60“American Heritage Education Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan educational foundation dedicated to the understanding and teaching of America’s factual and philosophical heritage to promote constructive citizenship and Freedom, Unity, Progress, and Responsibility among our students and citizens.”

For all you Core 3 and 4 Sonlighters out there (or anyone else studying American history) here’s a great resource to use for supplements.  AHEF offers a cd chock full of lesson plans that have been divided into grade levels (elementary, middle and high school) for teaching the significance of our nation’s history.

Rather than focusing only on the facts of our nation, the lesson plans take a more personal look at the why’s of the events that molded our country.  Then students are encouraged to take a look at themselves and see how they fit in to this equation.  As a teacher, this is what I most desire for my children.

Honestly, I could care less if they remember the date of this war or that.  But if my kids can tell me who was involved, why and how it has affected the world, the country, the people involved… themselves.  That’s what’s important.

I’d much rather they learn from history instead of just learning history.  This is a good resource to look into and it’s FREE!  You can order your own copy here at the American Heritage Education Foundation website.  Be sure and bookmark the link because there’s plenty to look at while you’re there.

Thanks for the tip Sara Jane. This does look like a great resource and I'll be mentioning it on my blog, http://www.historyforchildren.blogspot.com.
