A road trip to nowhere…

Our family loves a good drive in the country. We average about two drives a week that usually take us to the very rural parts of our surrounding communities – spending about 1 – 2 hours a trip. Just going nowhere. = )

This week my husband was on ‘vacation’ from work and we took a day trip yesterday for a bit longer excursion than our usual 1 hour tour. On a whim, we ended up at Meramec Caverns and took a tour of the cave hideout of Jesse and Frank James. It was a good day. Here’s some of the highlights.

Our trip was about 11 hours long – most that time was spent in the car listening to good music and enjoying the scenery. We did, however, watch Cars when a couple kids got to feeling less than well. The distraction helped them feel much better…

We passed through lots of interesting towns and sites along the way, including DeSoto, Potosi, Steeleville, Cuba, Stanton and St. Clair, MO.

We stopped at a couple of roadside parks to stretch our legs and take a few pictures.

The caverns were a fun unexpected surprise. When we started out that morning we had no intention of ‘going’ anywhere – just a drive to somewhere we’d never been. In our efforts to say “yes” more often, we found ourselves on a winding dead end road to Meramec Caverns. And I don’t think the trip would’ve been have as great without it.

If you’d like to visit these beautiful caves, you can plan your visit here.

    SaraJane,

I just found your blog today (looking for workbox ideas) and thought I'd browse some of your posts. I am intrigued by the photo display you have on this post – can you tell me how you made the collage of "snapshots" and posted them? Do you use photo editing software? A digital scrapbook template? I'd love to be able to do that! Thanks so much. I look forward to hearing from you when you have an opportunity.

    Blessings,

    Mrs. H

We were just a day ahead of you. We dropped Luke off at a camp near St. James on Wednesday. It is a pretty drive!

I know! I'd never been out that way but my husband travels down there quite a bit for work. I bet it's even better in the fall. We'll have to do this drive again in October. = )

We like to take drives too. The rise in gas prices has put a little cramp in our driving though. We have had a family project to visit every county seat in our state. We've been working on it for 7 years and have now made it to 93 out of 100.
